7 reasons why a Christian cannot smoke

There is much talk about issues in Christian life. But most of the times, we simply ask the wrong questions. It’s not really, why shouldn’t a Christian do this or that, but much more, why by his very nature, he cannot continue with certain areas of her/his former life. Here is a short breakdown on seven reasons why Christians cannot smoke (even, if they wanted to):

  1. It goes against the First Commandment of loving God with all your heart, strength, mind, and soul. Can you pull out cigarette and smoke while loving and worshiping God? Can you imagine Him being pleased, if His children would be sucking on a cigarette while singing praises to Him… Is that the fragrant aroma He desires?
  2. It goes against the Second Commandment of loving your neighbor. Second hand smoke can kill or simply just make others around you sick. Even the slightest discomfort a saint causes for others because of a personal indulgence should be reconsidered. (1 Cor. 8:9-13)
  3. It goes against the second part of the Second Commandment of loving yourself. This is an easy one. Just read the description of any cigarette package (some have horrific pictures) and tell me, this is loving yourself.
  5. It goes against the Second Commandment of loving your neighbor. Second hand smoke can kill or simply just make others around you sick. Even the slightest discomfort a saint causes for others because of a personal indulgence should be reconsidered. (1 Cor. 8:9-13)
  6. It goes against the second part of the Second Commandment of loving yourself. This is an easy one. Just read the description of any cigarette package (some have horrific pictures) and tell me, this is loving yourself.
  7. You might have noticed, I duplicated points one to three. I realized that if you don’t get the most important three reasons why a Christian cannot smoke, you might need to hear it again. I could give you all the reasons of the world in this forth or seventh point: It’s a waste of (God’s) resources (e.g. money, time, health), there is no real benefit (nobody started smoking, because it tasted good), it’s immature (sticking a piece of paper in your mouth and puffing out smoke for the sake of being cool or to belong doesn’t really matter anymore), etc. But these reasons should simply fortify what you already know… Smoking doesn’t please God.

It all comes down to this: Whatever you do does it please God? Does smoking create a joy in the heavens? It’s not even about doing sin, but avoiding vain ambitions in life that create no eternal nor divine value.

Much more, we need to maximize our time here on earth as bond-slaves and not merely churchgoers. Our goal is to have no time (nor a real desire) to smoke, for we are pressed to forward the Kingdom of Heaven here on earth with God.
